Overview
Pioneers Gate is a permanent public sculpture commissioned as part of the Pioneer Point development in Ilford, UK. It is sited in a public space and was presented to the town of Ilford as a gift.
The work consists of nine reciprocally liked rectangular stainless steel frame elements, and measures 288″ H x 78″ x 27″
Goals
The principal goal was to create a work that would engage the public and have a vivid formal relationship with the architecture of the development.
Process
The collaboration took place primarily between artist, client, and architect Michael Kirchmann of GDSNY, who among other responsibilities was tasked with engaging the public and managing the commission of a permanent public artwork for the site. We began with a discussion of the vision behind the development, particularly in relationship to the history and the trajectory of the town of Ilford and its inhabitants. We then followed through a process in which I presented and refined what would become the final design.
