Overview
The Phoenix is a long lived bird that is cyclically regenerated. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.
The Phoenix in China is called Fenghuang and symbolizes the union of Yin and Yang. Those legends are perceived by both teller and listeners to take place within human history and for its active and passive participants includes no happenings that are outside the realm of “possibility”. And if some of those legends are still alive today, it is more thanks to the listener than the teller.
Goals
In this context of active/passive relationship, I’ve designed this sculpture in order to produce an other interaction in between the sculpture and the public.
Created to sit on a roundabout, Phoenix Fire enables the viewer to become the kinetic element. So whilst the sculpture itself does not move, it appears to do so as you walk or drive around it, revealing its secrets inside the layers of painted steel.
Process
In substance, Phoenix Fire exist just because of you!.
