Overview

The Pewaukee Area Arts Council approached me to facilitate a permanent community work of art for the new Pewaukee Public Library. Because of my passion for doing community projects, I jumped at the opportunity to integrate a ceramic mural with the community.

Goals

The goal was to create a monumental work of art by the community. This mural was site specific for the interior of the Pewaukee Public Library. The Pewaukee Area Arts Council wanted the community to create a lasting impression in the very heart of the library.

Process

The community members came together to participate in a “ CLAY STOMP,” mixing four tons of clay with their feet. After mixing the clay, the clay was laid in large wooden frames. Later in the day families and community members carved the clay with images important to them. After the murals where transported and cut in smaller sections, they were fired, glazed and then installed in the new Library. This is a great example of community participation and the role of art in our lives… truly making a lasting impression.
