Overview

The large blue backlit feature is 40m x 7.5m (125' x 25'). The red backlit feature is 30m x 7.5m (100' x 25'). Both are made of enameled slumped glass that is 1″ thick and weighs 285kilos (625lbs). The brief was to provide powerful and dramatic abstract art – one for Departures, the other for Arrivals.

Goals

Each piece is seen for approximately 4 & 1/2 minutes when visiting the midfield concourse by underground train. The blue feature is designed to be calming for those departing on an aeroplane. The red feature is the first thing many visitors will see as they arrive in Hong Kong.

Process

We created a team with the artist Graham Jones, Andrew Moor as project manager and Peters Glass Studio as the manufacturer. Once part of the shortlist we prepared detailed designs for the two features. We were also responsible for designing the lighting, the engineering and the installation of the glass. We worked closely with the architects and the airport authority, for whom we made large full scale sample panels to test the lighting and the texture in the glass.

Additional Information

If you visit Hong Kong you have a 30% chance of seeing these glass artworks. We have had many emails WhatsApps and texts from enthusiastic viewers of these dramatic works.
