Overview
Fabrication and installation of feature wall murals at the Oak Park Public Library. Three floors, each approximately 180' x 11'3″. The panels are made of 3/4″ MDF wrapped with printed vinyl and Maharam fabric.
Goals
The designers at Eva Maddox Branded Interiors wanted to create a fun and engaging space for visitors to the library. To this end, brightly colored panels of irregular shape were employed as the main dividing wall on each floor. The incorporation of whimsical graphics, quotes from authors, shelves, computer stations, and display cases created an interactive experience which would not be provided by a flat wall.
Process
In this instance, our studio served solely as a consultant, fabricator, and installer. All designs came from Eva Maddox Branded Environments, and/ or Perkins and Will Architecture. We made recommendations on materials, most importantly, finding a quality anti graffiti over laminate to protect the graphics, while not destroying their visual appeal. Graphics were printed and mounted to panels in our studio in Chicago, and we oversaw the installation by union carpenters on site.
Additional Information
One of the more challenging projects on which I've been involved. The margin of error on panel sizes, and the angled, irregular shapes consisting of front faces, returns, and recessed areas combined with other architectural elements proved to be very difficult. The patience of the installers was very much appreciated.
