Overview
The bronze figure of Dr. King is 7ft. in proportion standing on a 4ft. high red granite base on a 2ft. high limestone platform. There is also a gold gilded highlighted bronze bas-relief front panel approximately 3ft. high and 33 in. wide.
Goals
The sculpture monument is located at the historic dividing line segregating the African American population from downtown Roanoke. Dr. king is portrayed as the leading Civil Rights Movement activist. The front panel of the bas-relief illustrates Dr. King and Coretta King marching with people of diverse backgrounds in Washington DC.
Process
We gave the pedestal design to the city of Roanoke and the city hired John Payne who also assisted us with the Dr. King monument in Austin, Texas. this was a nationwide sculpture competition.
