Overview

The Meribah Retreat Center in Muttontown Long Island commissioned Yan to created a 12feet tall cross, replacing the 12 corpus Yan carved in oak several years before and with time deteriorated .

Goals

The Meribah community desired : a cross to be placed adjacent to the chapel in the park like setting for prayer, meditation and relaxation with a colorful image of Christ in harmony with surrounding threes , shrubs and flowers.

Process

Yan Submitted several design sketches for approval by the community. Once the watercolor drawing was approved, Yan traveled to the Monastery in Schlierbach ,which has a historic stained glass shop and implemented his design. The material used is Bullseye glass, frits and stringers and fired to 1500 degrees.The final artwork has been mounted on site into a cor-ten steel cross.The characteristics of fused art-glass is a merging of the medium of glass and painting in a process which utilizes the latest available technological innovations. Because the final image is fused in the kiln, shapes and imagery of the artwork can be created freely, much like a painting. This allows for a immediate and spontaneous process which integrates the detail and expressiveness of painting with the optical qualities of glass. What is achieved is an art work consisting of one single, multilayered sheet or slab of glass., this process enhances the richness of the artwork and allows the artist complete freedom of expression.
