Goals

"Meandering", the name of the installation is program, "to move aimlessly and idly without fixed direction". The installation provides an opportunity to explore the inherent corporeal quality of the stairwell, which initially was meant to be solely a transitory, utilitarian space.
The eight floors of the stairwell are inundated with light often emphasizing overlooked spatial details, an empty wall, a dark corner or the structural steel of the elevator shaft. Several slow light sequences direct our attention to the very process of perception of space as well as time. Our attention shifts through multiple layers of stimuli, from the bright light panels, to numerous reflections on the glass partitions, to subtle soft color gradients on the walls, until the line between image and imagination becomes blurred.
The installation consists of 254 custom-made RGB LED light panels with side-lit acrylic. The suspended light panels are evenly distributed throughout the eight story stairwell. Each panel is individually controlled from a DMX lighting controller.

Process

The project balances the various demands of the eight story stairwell site at Borusan Contemporary. The building is the head quarter of Borusan Holding, one of Turkey's largest industrial conglomerates, which opens its doors to its contemporary art collection on the weekend. During the week the light installation functions in the background as pure utilitarian lighting. During the weekend it becomes an all-encompassing fine art installation employing a different light sequence.
