Overview
“Eye on the Ball”-M. Jacob Sportspark -Public Art Award
Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona
March 2019, Selected Artist, Column-1' x 7.5' Sign, steel.
Standing Panels-Each 3' x 8', steel.
$18,000
Selected on January 19, 2018. Awarded as the artist to create a piece on a pillar, not yet constructed, and three complementary freestanding pieces.
Goals
Create a piece on the pillar, and three complementary freestanding pieces representative of the newly renovated sports park.
Process
Upon receiving the award, meetings began with Pima County, Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (SAACA) and community members. The original design was refined, satisfying all involved. Engineering, installation details and coating options for the steel were confirmed. Over the span of a year, the pieces were installed.
Additional Information
I wanted it to be obvious and represent the sports played at the park. But, at the same time, I did not want it to be blatantly evident, but for people to be intrigued. From different angles, it has an abstract quality, but then you discover the three sports represented when viewed straight on. I wanted to convey a sense of motion and a hint of human forms. This theme is then echoed in a more literal way through the freestanding pieces.
