Overview
This project is a hanging cantilevered canopy over the reception desk of this timeshare hotel lobby and the light enclosure and rail. The Canopy, entitled “dreamers” is about 8 feet wide and a total of 10 feet tall and 8 feet out over the lobby.
Goals
This piece was supposed to integrate the romantic mystery of the French Quarter and reflect some of the old ironwork around New Orleans into a contemporary composition. The Rail and Light Enclosure is code compliant and has an abstract organic feel. The lobby of the hotel is the first place patrons see and where many functions take place so the designers and architects wanted it to really make a unique impression.
Process
For this project I worked closely with the architecture team and the interior designers to create the feeling they were going for. The clients also weighed in a lot with the design process. During the fabrication of the piece the architects and clients made periodic visits to my shop to see the progress and check in.
