Overview

Juice Served Here – Studio City is a retail shop selling cold pressed bottled juice, coffee, and health shakes. Nestled in 800 sq. ft, the entry was setback into a patio to draw an escape from the window with a zero-setback streetscape. It is paneled with Baltic-Birch wooden geometry for the pivoting storefront glass door. The paneling continues into the interior, drawing notice to the height and ceiling architecture to compensate for the spaces narrow width. Raw materials and exposed joists surround walls, complementing white menu boards. The shop’s colors are the skylight to wash the space with natural light.

Goals

The driving force and inspiration for the contrast of materials on the exterior as well as interior, was to break the heavy pedestrian street elevation with an inset patio. The wooden geometrical entry is suggestively carved out from the black monolithic-like stucco massing that compromises and compliments the elevation. Once entered, the geometrical wall paneling is backlit with warm LED lights that perimeter shelving merchandise and flanked wall treatment.

Process

In this scenario, the "artist" is the A-Industrial Design/Build team. We were commissioned to provide the client with a functional and legally permitted juice shop. We streamlined the project delivery method through our design and build process structure. In-house, our designers and builders collaborate in unison and draw inspiration from the owners to provide an in-depth creative solution for their project. They wanted flow and transition from seated exterior to point of sale; a warm inviting place with simple effective menu visualizations and clean modern lines. We generated a planset of construction drawings for the approval by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for the retail, prep, and consumption of juice in the kitchen area. We worked with the plan checkers and inspectors to follow building code and energy efficient environmental standards for the LED lighting and utility use. Once we met the requirements and the artwork met code, we built prototypes with lighting to effectively convey the geometry massing and spacing of the wall treatments. From there, we balanced and fleshed out the art per plan.

Additional Information

The entire process took about 5 months from design conception to built execution, and fell well within budget. The client has asked us to return and design/build another store, as they plan on creating a chain of Juice Served Here stores with similar architecturally branding.
