Overview

This is a 8' high, 8' wide, 200' long suspended sculpture that spans a newly built pedestrian bridge. The bridge is large enough to accommodate seating and study areas, and the sculpture helps the bridge to be a destination as well as a transit space. It is made entirely of enameled steel of various thicknesses.

Goals

The University asked me to find inspiration from their collection of historical medical books. I found the book "Micrographia" to be quite fascinating, and gathered imagery from the etchings to drive my design.

Process

I designed the project in concert with the builder and the architects, ultimately using VR to make some final adjustments. The sculpture is made using laser cutting and TIG welding process to ensure a perfect and robust object.

Additional Information

At 200' long, this is by far the largest sculpture I have ever created for a public space. However, it is also the lightest, weighing in at about 1500 lbs. The pattern which spans all 44 panels is created with approx. 30,000 holes.
