Overview

Illuminus was Boston’s first “nuit blanche” — a free nighttime Light & Projection Festival that took place in the Innovation District in Boston.

The Powerstation, the epicenter of the festival, was the meeting place for Boston’s transformed vibrant urban canvas where regional artists, designers, creative technologists, architects, performers and fabricators converge to showcase their most thoughtful, innovative, and imaginative works.

Goals

The goal of the project was to make the Illuminus Boston Powerstation come to life and to be bursting with light from every window and crevice. The Powerstation is typically used as a parking lot, and so through light and projections, the Illuminus Festival needed to use every surface to explore how light and story can help spark innovation in the community.

Process

Jeff Grantz, the producer of the festival, wanted his community to look beyond typical canvases, and make a bold statement that Boston is a place for Innovation and is starting to take ownership of that drive to innovate. Moving lights, wall grazers, and programmed sequences were used in balance with the projections to help cultivate intrigue and directing people patrons to the various zones of the festival.

Additional Information

We were limited, as it was the first annual in Boston, by our permits. We would have done more with lighting and putting lighting in locations that would have flattered the architecture more, but our permitting and budget restricted us to find alternative ways to have the whole Powerstation explode with light.
