Client: Port of Seattle, Sea-Tac International Airport

Overview

This commission for the Port of Seattle’s SeaTac International Airport was managed by 4Culture. I proposed a narrative painted glass curtain wall, 33 feet by 90 feet, for the end node of SeaTac’s Concourse A. The client wanted signature work, but hoped for a sense of place in the Pacific Northwest.

Goals

When designing a commissioned project, I consider the location and its use and develop a narrative theme that relates to the site. I want people to have a feeling of open-heartedness and well-being upon experiencing the art. I endeavor to create work that enlivens the environment and imbues the space with added meaning.

Process

The commission was awarded based on a maquette of my design and a proposal to work with the fabricator Derix Glasstudios. The work involved extensive collaboration with 4Culture, the South Terminal Expansion Project (STEP) team, and project architects NBBJ. I traveled to Germany to work as lead painter at Derix where the project was completed, crated and shipped. The installation was done by A-Walls, the STEP glazing contractor, with a Derix representative and the artist on site.
