Overview

Depicting flora and fauna in a refreshing Chinoiserie style, Holly's Aviary is handpainted in full color on blue. In this 24'x30' beachfront master bedroom, the imagery travels from floor to just below the crown in a gentle undulation of flowering French dogwoods ,olive trees and peonies. Songbirds and butterflies from around the world, flit through the tree canopy of springtime .

Goals

Creating Holly's Aviary came out of a desire to remodel the master bedroom which faces the ocean . The client has an extensive collection of fine Chinese Porcelain displayed throughout this grand home and wanted to create a refreshing Chinoiserie landscape in her bedroom. The cooling palette and limited colors were chosen to compliment the existing fabrics in the room and the client wanted to keep as much of the custom drapery as possible. Some of the butterflies hand painted on the wall are interpretations from her collection.

Process

I was asked to work with the client by designer Twila Parrot of CPM Designs in Tampa. She and I have had a working relationship for over a decade and when she called I interviewed the client in her home. Together got a sense of direction she wanted to go from her collections as well as being inspired by De Gournay wall paper. We discussed the elements of the room that she wanted to keep, and what she was willing to let go. Once a concept was decided upon , I did a scale drawing and sample boards. The designer chose the background color and ceiling color. I coordinated with the clients painters, to apply the base color and then I came in and painted the imagery.

Additional Information

This house sits right on the beach so it was important to create an open airy landscape, that would compliment the changing colors of the ocean and sky. The client was so happy in her new environment she told me that she slept better than she had in years.
