Overview

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey labored through the intensive process of examining and cataloging the scrap steel reclaimed from the September 11 World Trade Center destruction. Mueller Studio was one of several artist and community entities across the country selected to receive a steel from the Port Authority tto integrate into community sculptures and memorials.

Goals

The sculpture is part of the new Intergovernmental Center landscape design and City Center's Walkable Urban Space Initiative.

Process

Mueller Studio worked with Vetter Stone Company of Kasota Minnesota to cut the stone in a manner that would reflect the arcs in the steel. High pressure waterjet cut the shapes and the bench form was fabricated in 4 parts.

Additional Information

By integrating the steel into a reflection and dialogue place, our intention was to use these historic relics as a reminder that our diverse but interconnected world must continue to work toward peace. The stone element is intentionally quiet and graceful, with out extravagant sculptural manipulation. The steel artifact, #G-0048, in its dignified and raw state, is the focus of both a catastrophe, and a reminder of hope for non-violence.
