Overview
Cafeteria wall of the new building of the Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. The 50' x 10' x 3" mixed-media artwork is made from tiny paper rolls and acrylic paint. The substrate is sintra.
Goals
The goal for this project was to integrate a bright, texturally interesting piece of artwork into the cafeteria. The dimensional artwork, set into the recessed curved wall becomes part of the architecture. The blue and green colors complement an adjacent aquarium. The colors and patterns also echo the look and feel of the hospital's exterior. The art is viewable from the outside building. It is lit from underneath to add drama.
Process
The artist, art consultant, architect, and contractor all played a role in bringing "Flow" to life. The consultant provided the design goals and building specifications. The artist created the concept and sketches for the work. The architect determined spatial specifications and provided installation guidance. The contractor gave advice about how to fabricate the piece, and assisted with the installation of the piece. The artist spent many days on site making the piece appear seamless - repainting, patching, and adding more paper piece as necessary.
Additional Information
Fabricating and installing this project was a design challenge. The piece was built out of 16 panels of sintra. It was a jigsaw puzzle that was recreated on site. Each panel was glued and screwed to the wall. Seams were patched once every panel was up. In the end, it was a singular, continuous piece. The timeline on the project was extremely tight as well. Production and installation were all completed within four months.
