Overview

Steel trellis with two cast stainless steel birds (larks) on each side of the trellis. Different sized bells create sounds when there is a wind current.
12′ X 22′. This trellis is part of a permanent installation that also includes a series of “guide posts” that mark the entryway into the lobby. These guide posts have images of rescued animals on porcelain enamel-on-steel panels, and they welcome visitors into the building to meet and potentially adopt the available cats and dogs inside.

Goals

The art work was created for a new animal shelter, and the goal was to attract visitors to come to the center to meet and adopt the shelter cats and dogs.

Process

I worked initially with the architect to learn about the new animal care center and how it serves the animals and what it offers. I also got very well acquainted with the surrounding environment. The center is around the corner from the San Fernando Mission, which had a museum attached to it. The title nods to St. Francis of Assisi, who was known for his devotion to animals and their care, and for his gentle ways with all animals, including wolves. Many paintings depict him talking to a flock of larks.

Additional Information

This was a City of Los Angeles project. When the center opened, the city partnered with a private organization, Best Friends Animal Society. It now serves as the headquarters of Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles.
