Overview

domino effect, from Ingrid Ingrid, is a fun and entertaining experience that brings people together and fosters a spirt of cooperation on Place des Festivals in the Quartier des Spectacles (Montreal). The interactive installation consists of 120 giant dominos distributed across several stations. Topple the dominos in a long cascade and enjoy the results as the domino orchestra plays a unique musical work in an illuminated rainbow of pastel hues! Every set features a different sound profile (vocals, percussion, marimba, balafon or flute), and every domino has its own sound. You can even play DJ by “scratching” a domino.

Goals

The Quartier des Spectacles Partnership is mandated to help maintain this strategic district’s liveliness year round by hosting activities in the Quartier’s public spaces. These productions are intended to complement the cultural offerings presented by the Partnership’s members and the area’s performance venues. The Luminothérapie event is a major component of the Quartier’s free outdoor programming. It is an extension of the thinking behind the Quartier’s Luminous Pathway, the Quartier’s visual signature, in the form of twin rows of red dots projected on the ground to identify venues, along with architectural lighting and artistic video projections on several building façades. Presented in the heart of Quebec’s winter, Luminothérapie offers interactive and immersive experiences combining design, and digital art. Launched in 2010, Luminothérapie goals are to give Montrealers and visitors an original winter experience in the Quartier, and to promote Montreal as a city of design, and to stimulate creativity in the disciplines of urban installations and digital art. Luminothérapie is Quebec's largest competition for temporary public art installations.

Process

“Nearly all of us of have had the pleasure of toppling over a long line of dominos! We decided to use that simple, fun and universal pastime to bring passers-by together and foster a spirit of cooperation. We hope that participants will join forces to set the dominos back up and explore the different soundscapes the dominos create whenever they are handled or knocked over. For effet domino, we wanted to use bright tropical colours and fun, flashy patterns and sounds to give the installation and video a really playful feel and help people forget the winter gloom.” – Geneviève Levasseur, Creative Director, Ingrid Ingrid
