Overview
“Connections” is a series of abstract puzzle pieces made of stainless steel, polycarbonate, and LED lighting, installed at the Bellevue University campus, in Bellevue, Nebraska. The sculpture puzzle pieces intermingle with the walkway, giving it a unique interactive experience, connecting buildings, students, faculty and business opportunities. “Connections” invites you to dream, build and connect with the colorful shapes and piece.
Goals
The goal of this piece was to integrate the idea that there are many aspects of a college education that fit together like a puzzle, to create a complete picture of a student's future. The University created a new entrance for the college, and wanted a wayfinding piece to mark the entryway to the campus. The most important aspect of the piece was to create an environment that inspires students, faculty and visitors. The piece spans across the entry walkway into the college campus, welcoming students and faculty. Not only is "Connections" a welcoming, placemaking piece, but it provides a sense of motivation and encouragement. When creating this piece, inspiration came from thinking about the many paths to success that a student can take, and what inspires their dreams and aspirations to take the next steps towards a new and exciting future. Â
Process
The puzzle pieces are spread across a 60 feet wide area. There are 2 stacked puzzle pieces and 3 puzzle piece frames that stand 14 feet tall. They are composed of a stainless steel frame and LED back-lit panels. At night, the puzzle pieces come to life as they are lit with LED programmable lights. HDR Architecture was responsible for the landscape design, which complemented the intriguing design of the puzzle pieces. Bringing together the elements of light and sculpture, "Connections" is not only a welcoming and wayfinding piece, but a beacon of inspiration for students, faculty and guests.
