Client: Vivid Sydney

Overview

Coexistence, our site-specific projection mapping artwork for Vivid Sydney at Chatswood has been a unique project in many aspects. Inspired by the cultural diversity of Chatswood and Australia, Coexistence explores the relations between the individual and the community from different angles. With an unusual dramaturgy, the piece is divided into different acts similar to a theatre play. Each of the acts presents a different scenario of the basic situation of an individual meeting a community, exploring the contrasts of exclusion and integration or acceptance and isolation by four different artists from the Limelight team. Thanks to the talented guys at Limelight for creating this unique piece of art that we are really proud of.

Goals

The goal of Coexistence was to break the traditional mold of projection mapping and create a unique concept that explores complicated human emotion through performance art. As the concept came together, it became clear our team of artists would need to stretch beyond our typical 5-minute format to tell this story through a series of acts. Finding the balance between powerful imagery, while keeping the audience engaged over a 10-minute performance, required meticulous attention to detail by our Art Director, Csaba, and guidance from our entire production team. The result is an artwork unique to our almost 20 years of work, and a performance that was a standout at Vivid Sydney at Chatswood in 2019.

Process

We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with Vivid Sydney at Chatswood, and thankful to their team and the sponsors that make this light festival one of the largest and most celebrated in the world. The mission of radical inclusivity to represent not only local talent, but international artists of all genders and backgrounds nourishes the art community. Most of these artworks are public and no-cost to the viewer, which makes art and culture available to all, a pursuit close to the entire team at Limelight.
