Overview
The overall program is a coworking/incubator space on the Cortex Campus. We designed dynamic and flexible work environments along with casual meeting spaces, a game room, private conferencing and phone booths for when tenants need to be isolated. We selected pieces by St. Louis-based craftsmen and artists whenever possible, including a reception desk by John Beck Steel, custom wood ceiling panels by 9 Wood and Golterman & Sabo, and graphic fabrication by Engraphix and design by Arcturis.

Goals
The design goals of CIC@CET were to create a unique, modern space that would attract clients and create a dynamic work environment. The integration of art into the space heightened the creative nature of the workplace and truly made it a one of a kind space. It was really important to us that the design be innovative and unique, and the use of local artists contributed to this as well as our ongoing sustainability efforts. The primary focal point, the reception desk, was designed by John Beck. Arcturis graphic designer, Troy Guzman, developed the environmental graphics package, which truly tied the angular approach to the design throughout the space.
Process
While we have worked with John Beck in the past, the process was refreshing and unique. Arcturis began with a schematic concept for the desk both as an art piece and functional piece. We worked with John to tweak the desk angles and dimensions to fit within the constraints of the space and the code requirements that often lead designs into a more conventional direction. John was given creative license on the mix of materials, as long as these were primarily wood and steel with an angular form as we had sketched. The entry piece evolved into a beautiful front door for the space, as well as a functional piece that is used daily. Arcturis also collaborated with the owner’s internal design team to develop the space plan and finalize design details.

CIC@CET is an important project for St. Louis. It showcases St. Louis as an innovative technology hub by attracting Cambridge based CIC. It also further enhances the types of work environments available on the Cortex campus.
