Overview

470 square feet of contemporary stained glass comprised of 360 unique roundels and mouth-blown sheet glass. The entirety of the permanent installation at the new UH2 building on the Truman Medical Center campus, is fabricated using brass-reinforced lead came and retro-fitted seamlessly into the aluminum commercial window framing. The new building won an AIA award for design innovation in 2021. The colorful, detailed architectural glass was certainly counted in during the building’s AIA recognition.

Goals

Color within the framed windows, but also throughout the walls and floors of the building as light passed through was a major goal and achievement for this project. It was also an aim to create a piece that had appeal from hundreds of feet away, but also gave viewers plenty of interest and detail when inspected up close.

Process

Behind me, my team and I blew glass many hundreds of hours to achieve the unique glass in these panels. The fabrication was also a team effort, with four people on my team helping to cut, build, solder, cement, and clean each of the 36 panels in the project.
