Overview
Ceannmore is a large stone head, 5 foot 5 inch tall, 7.5 tons, granite on a cement pad, it sits on a bed of river stones. The name, and identity, of a place is underscored here through a work of art.
Goals
This was simply a placement of art within the The Town of Canmore. Several sites were considered in consultations between the town, its people and the artist.
Process
This was an artist directed project within the Town of Canmore's public art program. Collaboration was restricted to practical matters, such as installation.
Additional Information
King Malcolm III of Scotland was famously known as Ceannmore or ‘Great Head’. This seven and a half ton stone head was made for the Town of Canmore, in Canada’s Rocky Mountains. The combination of great mass and calm that I find in the area has been recreated in the big stone head. Ceannmore was made possible by the Town of Canmore and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
