Overview

Julia Koerner has been working within an inter-disciplinary approach that sets her apart from other individuals within the industry. Julia’s work is at the convergence of fashion design, architecture, and industrial design – realized by innovative and intelligent use of additive manufacturing (3D Printing) and robotics. The projects are Haute Couture 3d printed dresses showcased at Fashion Weeks in Paris 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Goals

The designs are digitally crafted on the computer and 3d printed using various emergent technologies and new flexible materials. The pieces were presented in spaces such as the Pantheon and Hotel Intercontinental in Paris at IVH's fashion shows. Julia‘s work stands out, recognized today at the top-level of these design disciplines, where it has been featured at the Venice Biennale, Paris Haute Couture, and institutions such as the FRAC and Art Institute of Chicago to name a few.

Process

The projects are collaborations between Julia Koerner and Dutch Fashion Designer Iris van Herpen and 3d printing company Materialise. Within the last year, Julia’s research and production of 3D-printed fashion pieces has transitioned from the haute couture to the ready-to-wear category. This has unveiled the capabilities afforded by additive manufacturing technology and how this can re-think and envision new possibilities within the fashion design discipline and industry.

Additional Information

The ‘biopiracy’ RTW fashion piece displays a new craft, a digital craft which employs parametric and computational design technology, together with additive manufacturing fabrication technology which is coupled material science – where the dress was 3D-printed in flexible material. The fashion piece displays an intricately beautiful three dimensional structure which is a synthesis of design and fabrication.
