Overview

Public Artist Tom Pearman, has taken the concept of folding rail maps to create a series of enamel way-finding signs, together with a large-scale 6 x 6 M
wall artwork, which references the rail network colours and symbols.
The artworks are created using vitreous enamel on steel –the same material and technique that is still used today by the rail transport network in London, both overground and underground.
“Thank you for your design and imagination – I too think this was a very successful partnership!” – Technical director, Bellway Homes Ltd.

Goals

This artwork and signage creates a unique and contemporary identity for the housing development. The Bellway Homes development, Nihill Place is situated on the location of the old Addiscombe Station. The existing yellow brick wall along the northwestern boundary is a remnant of the station building. This artwork and signage creates a unique and contemporary identity for the development.

Process

Tom worked with the client and stakeholders to establish an artwork that complemented the housing development and that established a clear way-finding tool for residents and visitors. Tom managed the fabrication and installation of the artworks throughout to a successful conclusion.
