Overview
Bell tower for Atrium Park at Kellenberg High School, Uniondale NY. Rev. Philip K.Eichner President.
The sculptural structure consists of three faceted dalles glass curved panels 2’6”w. x 24’, 29’ and 31 feet long. Supported on 12 four-inch steel column 40’h. Three historic Van Duzen bells cast by Buckeye Foundry in Ohio in 1876, 90, 94, weighting 400,500 & 700lbs .
Goals
Kellenberg High School desired a modern belltower to accommodate three historic bells. The tower to be located in the inner court of the school. The sound of the bells and a colorful composition of the firmament in a beautiful setting. A place for reflections and meditation. Giving serenity and joy to the students, giving a sense of sound and visual engagement with the surrounding fauna.
Process
The project started with a submission by artist Yan Rieger of several design variation in sketch form, followed up with a scale model. After approval a local company was contracted for the construction and erection of the steel tower. Yan produced a full size drawing for the artwork. Blenko glass blocks where faceted and set into epoxy by Helmut Schardt.
