Client: Four Seasons

Overview

As Above, So Below is a sculpture series located at the Four Seasons Hotel in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Set on the waterfront in a dynamic and walkable urban environment, the bustling area outside the hotel is the perfect setting for our pedestrian-oriented sculptures. They are composed of laser cut stainless steel, custom electronics and custom LED lighting.

Goals

The sculptures draw upon aspects used in Islamic art such as floral patterns, elaborate geometry and the manipulation of light. The stars feature a pattern of vines and flowers that bears similarities to traditional floral arabesques, but which follow a novel principle: what appear to be vines are actually conic sections - mathematically generated pathways that echo the motions of stars and planets through the heavens. What appear to be blossoms are also stars that act upon the curving vines. Together the vines/paths and blossoms/stars express a concept that the same laws apply throughout the cosmos as they do here on earth, which is the inspiration for the title of the artwork.
