Overview

UW Hospital selected me to work with them in decorating a new Diagnostic Imaging Pavilion in their American Family Children's Hospital. They chose seven images to be printed as large, room-filling murals (9 feet high by various widths up to 16 feet).

Goals

The designers and art coordinators at UW Hospital wanted to create a calm, soothing environment in which children would undergo a variety of diagnostic imaging procedures. My healthcare work is designed in keeping with the principles of Evidence-Based Art and therefore was easy to integrate into this project. In particular, this project involved images from the immediate area and all of the photographs selected were taken at various Wisconsin State Parks.

Process

My portion of the project was led by Art Coordinators at UW Hospital & Clinics. Once I understood the overall design parameters I helped them select ultra high-resolution photographs that could stand up to the extreme enlargement required for this project.

Additional Information

The response from both staff and patients has been extremely positive. The colorful nature scenes have helped create an environment that is calm and soothing. The children undergoing tests in this area now have something positive to take their minds off the medical equipment that surrounds them.
