Overview

The Winged Chariot is linked to our ancient past. It is a metaphor for the power of time and celebration. Two figures of ancient mythology Helius, the god of the sun/sunlight and Triptolemus, a demi-god of the Eleusinian mysteries are stories of winged exploits. The Winged Chariot with its front plow and wings of flight celebrates the people who explored the unknown…telling a story of the breaking new ground and sharing knowledge. The Winged Chariot expresses the exploration of skills, knowledge, and enjoyment of art at the Tyler Park Center for the Arts.

Goals

The Tyler Park Center for the Arts is located in the Tyler State Park and its mission is to “enrich the community through fine arts, crafts, and music: to encourage art education and excellence, and to nurture artists in a community of connection and support”. The Tyler Park Center ask the artist to create a site/theme specific sculpture for their outdoor exhibition space. The artist and the Tyler Park Center for the Arts work collaboratively for the placement of The Winged Chariot at the Center.

Process

A wooden scale model of the The Winged Chariot was created by the artist. The model, description and images were presented to the Tyler Park Center for the Arts for their comments and approval. Once approved the sculpture was fabricated by the artist and ART Research Enterprises. For transportation purposes the wings were fabricated separately and attached to the chariot on site by the artist and ART Research Enterprises's staff. The sculpture was installed alongside an agricultural field in the outdoor exhibition space.

Additional Information

Location: Tyler Park Center for the Arts, Tyler State Park, PA. The Winged Chariot is a large-scale sculpture of fabricated stainless steel, stainless steel wire cloth, and accented with blue resin. The completed sculpture is 15’H x 12’W x 12’D and approximately weighs 500lbs.
