FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CODAworx Announces Art Commission Contract

Children’s Hospital of Alabama submitted by Guy Kemper

MADISON, WI, June 27, 2018 – CODAworx, the hub of the commissioned art economy, today announced the introduction of a standardized Commission Contract that clearly spells out the agreement between the entity commissioning a work of art and the artist or company hired to create the commission. The CODAworx Commission Contract, developed in digital form and available on the CODAworx website, provides a simple fill-in-the-blank format to detail the expectations and align the goals of both parties to the artwork commission.

CODAworx has spent years working with artists and commissioners, and as a result, came to understand that one of the major barriers in the commission process was the lack of standardization and clarity around the legal documents. “Every time an art commission occurs, there is an expensive and inefficient process of re-inventing the wheel,” said Toni Sikes, CEO of CODAworx. “It is our hope that the time and legal cost of creating a contract will be greatly reduced, allowing commissioning entities and artists to focus on the artwork itself.”

CODAworx created the Commission Contract with an attorney in New York who is experienced in art law. While developing this digital tool, the Company reviewed a large number of contracts and took suggestions from its members.

In general, the CODAworx Commission Contract is intended to reflect current practices and to guide industry norms. It is an interactive tool and includes the flexibility for customization to accommodate a variety of situations. The document is intended to be purchased and completed by the commissioning entity and provides a simple and straightforward way to finalize an agreement with the commissioned artist.
